Polignano al Mare

Our tummies were rumbling so we headed from Alberobello over to Polignano al Mare, where M knew of a good restaurant.

We were greeted by a statue of Domenico Modugno, singer, songwriter and actor, most known for his hit song Volare (Nel Blu di Pinto di Blu). This was his beautiful hometown.

Lunch was at Il Bastione, a seafront restaurant at the Covo dei Saraceni hotel.

The food and the service was excellent. We shared two appetizers to start. Gamberi crudi or prawns that were fresh and sweet to taste.

Impepata di cozze or mussels with pepper, in a fragrant celery and onion broth. We just couldn't resist mopping up the broth with the Pugliese bread on the table.

What a great start. We admired the view of the town outside while waiting for our main dishes. This fishing village is built on limestone rock perched above the sea.

My fritto misto or fried seafood was delicious. The lightly battered fish, calamari and shrimp was some of the best I've ever tasted.

S had the zuppa di pesce or 'fish soup', mixed seafood and tomato stew. Also very good, thanks to the fresh ingredients.

We finished up with a refreshing lemon sorbetto that absolutely hit the spot. Then to help digest all the goodness, we took a walk around the town.

All too soon the sun was setting and it was time to go get ready for the upcoming capodanno or new year's eve festivities.
